TRANSPORTATION.....WHERE HIGHWAY
MEETS THE RAIL
Since
its early history as a busy canal and railroad port, the community's social, economic and
historic fabric is woven by the D&H Canal and Erie-Lackawanna Railroad. Today, Port Jervis
HIGHWAY
& RAIL
Port
Jervis is located at the core of a network of linking highways including I-84, I-81,
NY209, US6, NY97 and the future

One
of the most important features in the City's transportation network is the rail connection
served by Norfolk-Southern/CSX, NJ Transit and the Metro-North commuter railroad (MTA). Port Jervis has a distinct advantage over many
other parts of the Region in that the community benefits from direct access to rail links
through the Norfolk-Southern network. Nearly all of the city's industrial lands have rail
sidings enhancing the ability of local businesses to move goods and raw materials via
economical rail freight services. Norfolk-Southern has approximately 10 freight trains per
week which carry cargo along the Erie-Lackawanna railroad line through Port Jervis to
markets in the west, southeast and the northern corridor with ready access to our North
American trade partners in Canada and Mexico.
Port
Jervis is also a prime rail commuter hub in the Tri-State Region for persons traveling to
job markets in the NYC Metropolitan area. Metro-North/NJ
Transit has 8 passenger service trains from Port Jervis to Hoboken, NJ with connecting
service to the World Trade Center and ongoing service to midtown Manhattan. Plans are currently underway for construction of
the Secaucus Transfer Station (opening May 2002) where commuters will be able to access
direct service to midtown Manhattan cutting travel time by as much as 30 minutes per trip.

AIR
Port Jervis is also near major air transportation with Stewart International Airport in Newburgh, New York located only 35 miles east of Port Jervis and Scranton-Wilkes Barre (AVOCA) Airport in nearby Pennsylvania, located just 60 miles west of the city. Additionally, with close proximity to New York City and the New Jersey metropolitan areas, the City of Port Jervis is less than two hours travel from all the NY/NJ major airports including Newark International Airport, LaGuardia and JFK.
