O&R, TRI-STATE 1st RESPONDERS DRILL EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN

MATAMORAS, Pa. Nov. 2, 2015 — Local residents should expect lots of emergency lights and sirens, big trucks, firemen and other emergency personnel moving through the community streets on Saturday morning, November 7.

All that action won’t be the result of an unfolding emergency; it will be the preparations to fight future emergencies.

Over a dozen separate emergency services agencies from Pike, Orange and Sussex counties plan to join Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R) on Saturday from 8 a.m. through noon to conduct a New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey field exercise.

The morning-long exercise will center around a Joint Incident Command Post at the Matamoras Fire Department headquarters on Sixth St.

The exercise is designed to update the utility’s and its community emergency responder partners’ working knowledge of long-held standard operational and safety practices and protocols under real-life conditions.

The exercise also provides an opportunity for O&R to field test newly developed response plans and to brief its community first responder partners on how those new plans relate to their work.

As a prelude to the field exercise, O&R sponsored a successful emergency response tabletop exercise with most of the key organizations at the Matamoras Fire Department Headquarters on October 8.

In addition to O&R and its sister utility Con Edison, participating organizations are: the Matamoras Office of Emergency Management and Fire Department, the New York State Office of Emergency Management,  Bon Secours Community Hospital, the Town of Deer Park, the Sparrowbush Fire Department, Westfall Fire Department and Office of Emergency Management, Pike County Public Safety and the Office of Emergency Management, Orange County Office of Emergency Management, Eastern Pike Regional Police Department, Montague (N.J.) Fire Department and Office of Emergency Management, the Delaware Valley School District, the Port Jervis Office of Emergency Management & Fire Department and Time-Warner Cable.

Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. (O&R) is a regulated utility, a wholly owned subsidiary of Consolidated Edison, Inc., which is one of the nation’s largest investor-owned energy companies. O&R provides electric service to approximately 300,000 customers in southeastern New York State (where its franchise name is Orange & Rockland), northern New Jersey (where it’s Rockland Electric Company) and northeastern Pennsylvania (where it’s Pike County Light & Power Co.) and natural gas service to approximately 130,000 customers in New York and Pennsylvania.
